Treating Allergies

      Zoom Plus        Zoom Minus

?What is an allergy
An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system.
Sometimes when the immune system encounters a certain substance (such as olive blossom, dust or a cat), it makes a mistake and identifies this substance as dangerous, (even though it isn't), so it starts to work excessively in an effort to eliminate the threat.

How do we work with allergies?
We retrain the immune system to correct it's error so it learns to treat this substance just like other similar substances it isn't allergic to.
 * The source of the allergy. If we know the cause of the allergy, good results are much more likely, If we don't exactly know the cause, the chances of good results are much less. Therefore, it's important to discover the cause through a process of association with the problem (the skillful use of Milton language and NLP meta-languages can help us),
If there are multiple allergies, we can treat them one after another. Sometimes, when we treat one allergy the others sort themselves out, so we should ask the subconscious about each allergy - whether this is the case.
* Explanation. We should explain to clients that sometimes the immune system makes a mistake in identifying a substance as dangerous, even though it isn't dangerous at all, and tries to eliminate it from the body by a histamine reaction - tears, mucus etc. In fact, the substance itself isn't dangerous - most people don't have an allergic reaction to it .It's possible to teach the immune system to correct its mistake and regard the substance like similar substances it isn't allergic to.
* Emotional roots. Very often there is an emotional factor behind the allergy. Our subconscious mind simply chooses to communicate with us in this way, disturbing us so powerfully that we can't ignore it. Frequently, allergies are a way to be polite. It happens to people who are very polite, and become allergic to something they don't want to ask others to avoid. For example, a woman who became allergic to cigarettes, because she didn't feel comfortable asking her mother not to smoke at home.
Sometimes allergies develop in a period when a person's social or mental skills are insufficient to overcome a stressful situation, so the subconscious mind chooses an allergy as a way to cope or not have to deal with the situation. Events, connected to the period when the allergy broke out, can be hints to the root problem - which should be treated by other NLP techniques.
* We must check the ecology or secondary gain in the situation by asking "What would your life be like without the symptoms? Will there only be positive results or also negative results?"
* It's important to treat in an ecological manner - and to use additional tools, if needed (such as visual squash or timeline), to solve the emotional problem, instead of going for the allergy itself. Otherwise the allergy is likely to return. A good ecological approach would be to suggest "You can leave your emotions for important things, like your feelings about others."

Safety Guidelines
* If there are widespread symptoms, the client should check with a doctor that there is no infection - because in this case the immune system really should be reacting.
* If the client complains about migraine, they should check with a doctor that it doesn't have a physiological cause (e.g a tumour).
* If the client receiving medication they should consult the doctor about whether to proceed with any other kind of treatment.
* If the client uses an inhaler, they should bring it with them to meetings, in order to be on the safe side.
* We emphasize to the client that exposure to the allergen after treatment should be gradual.
* There is a low risk of a rebound - an improvement followed by deterioration. In this case we need to check the ecology and reinforce the healing process by repeating treatment.
